2nd. Interviewing Carmen G. Shammas from Shanta Mia bags

Carmen González Shammas is a spanish designer married to a Kuwaiti with too many concerns as to stay home crocheting. Always thinking in what to do and with many ideas in her mind a couple of years ago decided to start designing with her close friend Sawsan Ashkanani the type of bags they couldnt find in the shops in Kuwait. Due to their travelling they were able to gather many kind of special materials that with their good taste turn to be marvellous bags.
Their success couple of months ago in Fa Gallery has made them decide to celebrate a new exhibition. For sure I will let you know when.

Today I am interviewing my dearest friend Carmen G. Shammas.

1.When did you begin designing your bags? The initial idea started a number of years ago but we only became serious about it in 2009 when we began designing our bags and having them produced. We had our fisrt exhibition in November 2010.

2. Did you have any previous experience designing any other thing?
Yes both my partner and I did. Sawsan is an interior designer and had a company involved in this field for some time now. I am a fashion designer by profession and was involved in designing accessories when I was in London then when in Kuwait followed this through with designing costumes for the Ballet School in Kuwait for about 14 years..
3. Talk us about your partner Sawsan. Sawan is an interior designer by profession. Her origins are from Yemen but she grew up in Kuwait. She began her work in interior design and set up a company with a partner catering for the local market. As early as 2005 we talked about our idea in making bags. The opportunity came up a few years ago and we decided to team up and put our talents together in creating ladies handbags that were different, being one of a kind.No two bags are the same, each has its unique look.
4. How do you divide the work? As I said it's teamwork but Sawsan concentrates more in designing the bags and then we develop the idea further in deciding which materials to use and so on. I also tend to follow up on the administrative side such as marketing, manufacturing and accounts. However, we both work hand in hand !!!!

5. Where do you find the inspiration?
If I told you others will begin to look for it as well! We have always loved the arts and when we actually see an idea come to reality it's enough to give us that extra adrenalin to create more and sometimes with even more passion than the previous time....

6. From where do you bring those marvellous materials you use for your bags? We have done a fair bit of travelling and over time have collected items that appealed to us. We may not have thought where it was going to go but having so much they somehow fall into place when we select which to use and where. And we continue to collect and build our resources thereby giving us the opportunity to make unlimited choices.

7. Where can we find your bags? At the moment we are presenting them at exhibitions. The most recent was at the Fa Gallery last March and we plan on having another one there this coming June. We also have our website Shantamia where you can shop online as well. We are hoping to have a full time display at some stage and are working on the location.

Spanish fashion in Kuwait | Moda Española en Kuwait II parte

As we discussed in previous post, the Spanish fashion has a big representation here. Once again, the Inditex group is in all world and markets but "Not only of Zara can the human being dress", right? Companies such as Condor have been installed in this country for a long time and that for moms like me who like the quality and variety of brand socks is helpful (in Baroue find them). Hoss Intropia is also in Kuwait (In The Avenues Mall) rather more expensive than in Spain but the truth is that it's good to go to the store and see the richness of the fabrics and skill in designing clothes. I have a dress that once landed in Bilbao I'll see if I can still find it and buy it.  And we are also fortunate to have Adolfo Dominguez (also in The Avenues Mall) the store is huge and has the entire collection including U the young brand. Something I realy miss is a good brand of Spanish Shoes with good prices. We are lucky to have  Pretty Ballerinas and from time to time Casta...

Cologne made in Kuwait, throughs me back to good memories of my grand Father. It´s quite cheap, 1.650 kd and you can get it from the coop, Shamiya. I also think its a good souvenir from Kuwait or even a gift for birthdays or Christmas.
