The so called
“celtic music”, many times referred to folk music from Ireland , Scotland
and Bretagne , is also peculiar to the regions
of Asturias and Galicia in northern Spain . Some of the most popular
celtic music festivals take place in Ortigueira (Galicia ) and Avilés (Asturias).
These regions are the cradle of well known musicians –including some of the
best pipe players- and groups from the celtic music panorama: Jose Angel Hevia
(who created the electronic pipe and had a worldwide success in 1999 with his
theme “Busindre reel” included in his record “Tierra de nadie”), Xuaco Amieva,
Llan de Cubel and Felpeyu (all of them from Asturias) or Carlos Nuñez, Cristina
Pato, Milladoiro, Luar na Lubre and Berroguetto, (from Galicia). The Asturian
group Tejedor is a highlight in this short list, featuring the prodigious pipe
playing by Jose Manuel Tejedor -1990, 1993, 1997 MacAllan-MacCrimmon prize for
pipers- and the virtuoso accordion music by Javier Tejedor.
After a decade
consecrated to studying and interpreting traditional Asturian music to a great
success (more than 20 Spanish and international prices by that time) Tejedor
Brothers (José Manuel, Javier and their sister Eva, the singer in the group)
decided to give a boost to their musical career in 1995 by composing their
future works and filling with them the records to come. The first CD “Tejedores
de sueños” (Weavers of dreams) was recorded at studio Elkar (San Sebastian) in 1999
by Resistencia records under the great Scottish musician Phil Cunningahm
production and the instrumental contributions of Kepa Junquera, Michael
McGoldrick, James MacKintosh (Shooglenifty) and Duncan Chisholm (Wolfstone)
among others.
The second CD
“Llunaticos” (Lunatics) was also recorded at studio Elkar and it was released
in 2003 by Aris Musica with the production of Tejedor and Cesar Ibarretxe. In
2006 Tejedor published a new CD, “Musica na maleta“(Music in the suitcase) with
the collaboration of old friends such as Michael McGoldrick, James MacKintosh
(Shooglenifty) and John Joe Kelly (Flook). By that time, Tejedor Brothers were
receiving the most prestigious awards in Asturian music and also participating
in European festivals like Inter Celtic Festival of Lorient (1999, 2003 and
2007) William Kennedy Piping Festival (2003, 2005) or Keltic Connections (2001,
2007) as well as touring in a number of European and Latin American countries.
They have
accompanied great artists such as Van Morrison and Sinead O´Connor on the
stages of Spain and France and collaborated in the works of other musicians in
the Spanish and European scene: Victor Manuel, El Sueño de Morfeo, Ella Baila
Sola, Revolver, Carlos Nuñez, Luar na Lubre, Niall Vallely, Alasdair Fraser,
Davy Spillane, etc. Some of their compositions have been interpreted by great
folk groups such as Sharon Shannon, The Tannahill Weavers, Gordon Duncan or
Lunasa. In 2007 Hermanos Tejedor composed and interpreted the soundtrack of the
Spanish film “La Torre
de Suso” (Suso´s tower)
“Positivu”
(Positive), released in 2011 –this time without Eva Tejedor- is their fourth
album: seven instrumental tracks and five songs with great musical contributions.
The Irish singer Karan Casey on a bonus track contributes to the complete
musical experience of this work.
